Crib Safety

When planning a nursery, crib safety is at the top of everyone’s mind, but mattress safety is just as important. Babies sleep between 12 and 15 hours a day— so it’s important that proper attention is paid to the sleeping environment. Here are some things to look for when choosing a mattress:

Type
Look for a mattress made with heavy-duty coils or a dense foam core for durable, even support. While you might prefer a soft mattress, firm mattresses are safest for babies. Also look for a full perimeter border wire. A border wire will spread weight evenly and keep the mattress edges firm when baby is standing.

Size Matters
Make sure your mattress is the correct size for your crib. There should be no more that two-fingers width between the edge of the crib mattress and the side rail of the crib. This is one place where wiggle room is not a good thing.

Covers
Laminated or stain resistant mattress covers are important for maintaining a healthy sleeping environment. The covers are easily wiped clean with a damp cloth, eliminating the possibility of harmful bacteria growth.

Extras
Notice the small things. You might not think to check how the mattress is sealed or what kind of stitching is used, but these are important elements. Look for heavy-duty cloth binding with lock stitching. The cloth binding is stronger than vinyl, and lock stitching prevents the entire binding from unraveling if any threads become loose. Also look for features like mattress vents that keep the sleeping environment fresh with natural air circulation.

Warranty
Take note of the warranties. Serta offers 10+year warranties on its mattresses, providing reassurance that the mattress will last you from the baby years through the toddler years.

Safety
Last but not least, make sure the mattress meets all Federal and State safety standards so you can rest assured knowing your little one is sleeping safe and
sound. Serta has an exclusive Fireblocker layer that ensures all its mattresses meet the flammability standards.

Baby On A Budget

Babies are expensive, but nurseries don’t have to be. Here are some tips for creating the nursery of your dreams without breaking the bank.

Start with an affordable nursery collection
The crib and other furniture pieces are the backbone of any nursery. There are many beautiful and well-made collections available at budget price points. Many of them even convert to toddler and full size beds, so the initial investment will pay off for years to come.

A little bit of paint goes a long way
Converting a den or office into a nursery? A fresh coat of paint should be your first move. Relatively inexpensive as house renovations go, a new coat of paint in a fun color will totally transform a room.

DIY, DIY, DIY
Utilizing all of the wonderful DIY projects online is the number one thing you can do to save money on decorating. The furniture has been purchased and the walls are painted, but it’s those extra touches that turn a room with a crib in to a nursery. For wall art, channel your inner Picasso and make some colorful abstract paintings. If you’re not feeling quite so adventurous, use foam craft stamps or your own handprints for more figurative art. When you’re done, frame your creation and hang in the nursery. Wall art is a great place to start if you haven’t done many DIY projects before, but depending on your level of craft skill, you can make your own window treatments, wall decals, stuffed animals, and even crib bedding! The amount of things you can do in this category is infinite, but to get you started we’ve linked to some of our favorite tutorials below.

Reuse, Reduce, Recycle
Renovated the living room last year? Now’s the time to dig out that lamp that’s been sitting in the garage and give it a new life. Have a pile of old calendars and magazine back issues sitting around? Mine them for frameable nursery art. How about those jelly jars, pickle jars and cookie tins? Use them to hold supplies, or fill them with colorful candies and use them as decorations. Dig around Mom and Dad’s basement for childhood favorites—old games, stuffed animals and posters are all great things to showcase in the nursery. In addition to being better for the environment, reusing and recycling things is better for your budget as well.

Starting with great furniture makes designing (and redesigning) a snap!

Few people are able to buy new furniture on their every whim, so including pieces in your home that are timeless and transitional is important when considering design.  Investing in a piece that can be used for multiple purposes will give you the most return as you periodically redesign based on trends and individual needs.

Transitional pieces are perfect in any room.  Benches that open to storage and bookcases that double as media centers make great examples.  Storage is always needed, from living room to bedroom to home office.

Nurseries used to be rooms full of furniture soon to be packed away and forgotten.  That isn’t the case anymore, as multiple lines carry the Lifestyle crib®, which convert from crib to toddler bed, then day bed and finally a full sized bed with complete footboard and headboard.  Combine the functionality with fine craftsmanship and these are pieces that will be cherished in your baby’s room, worthy of a toddlers charm, sturdy enough to survive a young adults string of slumber parties, and also functional in a college dorm.

Combining heirloom quality, timeless pieces with fun and fresh wall colors and linens can keep your room fresh, and fill the design bug in all of us within any budget.

Things to look for in quality furniture include dovetail joints on drawers instead of glue and sturdy hardware on drawers and cabinets.  Also, if you plan on converting your furniture, be sure to purchase any future pieces needed, such as bed rails, in advance.
