What’s Your Style?

Defining Modern, Contemporary, Traditional and Classic furniture.

modern-chairsWhat’s your style?  Sure, you may have pieces from college that yell Retro, or a Classic piece that’s been passed down through the family, but what design style suits your taste – and what exactly is the difference between them? Here’s a quick summary along with some of this years hottest cribs to match.

Modern Furniture

Modern refers to the design, not the time period.  While most Modern furniture was designed post World War II, not all recent furniture designs are Modern.  Angles, minimalist designs and solid colors dictate Modern design.  Overstuffed sofas covered in colorful pillows, no matter how new, would not fall into this category.  Many retro and art deco furniture designs also fall into the Modern category.  Sleek, smooth, and clutter free, the clean lines of the Metro collection by Bonavita were designed with Modern style in mind.

Contemporary Furniture

Contemporary design is just that – contemporary.  Instead of a style, it refers to what furniture is on trend at the moment.  A contemporary piece in 2013 will no longer be contemporary in 2020 when styles have changed.  Modern/Retro furniture styles were actually considered contemporary when they were released and in high style in the 60s and 70s. Most of us are surrounded by contemporary furniture, because it easily fits in any home.  Japanese, American and European Contemporary designs, while all different, still fall into this category for their consumers.

Contemporary furniture is typically fairly simple – passing up ornate carvings and unique finishes for clean lines and easy to care for pieces that are not overly large – making them easy to fit into any home, regardless of style and size.  The Kinsey crib by Bonavita is on style with todays casual finishes, but provides a classic look making it timeless.

Traditional Furniture

Traditional furniture calls to mind warm, comfortable rooms.  Skirted chairs, curtains and matching rugs bring together the heavy furniture pieces, often in dark finishes like mahogany or cherry.  None of the silver accents from the Modern home, Traditional rooms will have brass or gold detailing.  Be careful though, it’s easy to overfill a room with the large pieces and strong patterns. The Belmont crib by Bonavita with its curved rails coordinates beautifully.

Classic Furniture

The carvings, dark finishes and large size of the Traditional furnishings overlap into Classic a bit, however, Classic furniture takes it to the next level.  A Classic room has a Buckingham Palace type quality with velvets, silks, ornate carvings and antiques.  There are many different categories of Classic furniture depending on the design such as Victorian, Tudor, Gregorian and French Provincial, but all exhibit the same traits.  The Hudson crib by Bonavita works perfectly with this décor.
